Now I'm in the library of the Shire of Margaret River, using free Internet. But bad that if I want to check e-mail, I still have to pay for it. Anyway, it's still good to enjoy free and fast Internet.
Magaret River is about 3-hours drive south of Perth. She is known for the very best wineries Australia. Looking for seasonal work in vineyards, my friends and I drove here.
After 3 weeks of waiting, my guy friends are able to get jobs of tree planting from the manpower agencies here. Kind of joking, we say that they are doing a very meaningful job, adding more greenery to the world. But the work is really harsh. In their first day of working, while they got back home, they seemed like dead in the freezing and rainy weather.
My other two friends (girls) and I are still waiting. The waiting seems endless. Every morning, we have to turn up at the agencies at around 0645hrs-0700hrs, just to check if there are any vacancies. But we have too many male competitors. They are far more advantageous than us, since the agencies believe (yeah... though to a certain extent, I think so too) the guys are much more stronger than gals in the seasonal work. But another observation that upset us is, there is kind of racial discrimination here. We observed that westerners might just need 1 or 2 days of waiting and got work from the same agency, which at the same time, claimed to us (all other Asians) that there were NO work today. I don't feel particulary bad since I assume it's normal. But just seeing it realized is not a good feeling neither. Indeed, the elder brother of my friend, who has lived in Adelaide for more than 20 years, had told me that the racial discrimination in Western Australia, particulary Perth, is still common.
Having plenty free time, my Korean friend and I volunteer in a bookshop in the town in weekdays. The bookshop is run by a family. Every morning, we spend an hour or two in the bookshop, helping them to arrange books in Alphabatical order and simple follow up of newly delivered books. Working in bookshop has always been one of my ideal job, no matter at home or overseas. Though it's unpaid, we enjoy it much. The family is nice to us. Last Saturday, we joined their birthday party. The party was not that funny to me but it's interesting anyway to take part in a local party.
The Magaret River is very laid back and relaxing. Life here is peaceful and quiet. In the time of waiting for job, I enjoy the quiet life here much. In my plenty of leisure time, I usually read books and go window shopping in town. Sometime, my friends and I would bake cakes. I really like the smell of freshly baked cakes! =) And, life here would be perfect if I get job soon!!!
